Retaking The Mine

Continued from last post...

Unfortunately for Imperial Commander Brushkin, the Kingdom of Colores is not bluffing, and the assault transports bore in.  The Imperial troops belatedly open fire and one of the transports explodes.

But wait, those aren't KC troops!??!

Now it all comes together, the Governor General has pulled off a huge diplomatic success.  He secretly concluded a treaty with the Tim-Tai Trading League to end the conflict on New Cypress.  The treaty provided the KC use of mercenaries in the League's service for this operation. Alliances and deals are always temporary out here in Sector Six!

But back to this action packed episode...
The Imperial garrison is made up of several disparate units...

The action is close and casualties are heavy.  Lord Walishire and the Mercenary Commander square off in close combat.
But in the end the Imperials cannot hold and the rescue force breaks through
"Commander Brushkin, in the name of the Kingdom of Colores, I reclaim this facility. Your sidearm please."

Meanwhile, Back at the Mining Colony...

I was stuck on how to represent the Mining Colony on the tabletop.  For the space battle, I used a model of the Bespin Gas mine, but for the upcoming ground action, I didn't have a suitable set of terrain.  Then I remembered the old Saturday morning serials Space Academy/Jason of Star Command that utilized structures built into an asteroid motif.  It was an idea also used in the opening missions of the original Starcraft video game.  Using those concepts as inspiration, I took some foam mountains I had saved of the model RR that had to be torn up, plus I had some "martian" themed pieces from an old project. While not a perfect match, I think it came together pretty well.  I can't wait to fight it out.

Our story so far: 
A few weeks earlier (see the post "Naval Operations Commence"), a Naval Squadron of the Kingdom of Colores (KC) opened fire on an Imperial cruiser that was in violation of KC territorial space.  The Imperium brooks no resistance, so in retailiation, Imperial forces seized Xeres Corporation Mining Outpost 427 that belonged to the KC and demanded reparations.  Astoundingly, KC ships attacked and drove off the Imperial covering squadron, (See post "Going on the Offensive").  Imperial Battalion 4399 is now stranded, but firmly in control of the mine.
"Commander Bruskin?"
"Yes Major?"
"The Imperial Navy has replied that they do not see a relief operation feasible for at least 45 days.  So, should we re-open negotiations with the enemy?"
"No Major, we still hold the population of this mining station as hostages. They will not dare attack.  Those troopships just off the landing pad are a bluff.  We will wait....

The miners and their families will just have to skip a few meals until our Navy can get moving."

...And Now For Something Completely Different

...Space Nazis

These pictures were taken during a raid on the Imperial planet of Dusa. These particular soldiers of the 4th Reich,  the 10th Panzer Division, come from the desert planet of Ares and are noted for their orange tinted camoflage pattern. They took the orbiting station then raided the surface colonies. Warfare with the Nazi's is characterized as being especially bitter, and by the time of the 10th's departure, overall civilian casualties were moderate, but not a single Imperial official survived.

Enforcing the Truce

After driving the Timtai's back across the border of New Cypress (offically, "The Trading League of Timtai", for those sticklers of history who nitpick the petty conflicts of Sector Six), both sides agree to a truce. Here is a Troop the 23rd Foreign Auxiliary Cavalry patrolling the border.
Negotiations have been repeatedly delayed by the Trading League under the pretext of needing more time to research the GovGen's terms.  We shall see...

Going On the Offensive

My second battle using the Star Navy rules.  This time, I used points to match the sides (Imperials 72 vs. KC 50) then rolled detection for setting up and first turn.  The Mining Colony is from the old Micro Machines Star Wars collection.  The Imperial BB is from the WOC Star Wars game, the Imperial CA is the Sulaco from the Micro Machines Aliens set, and the Kingdom Ships are Ravenstar Cold Navy Diesho Confederation line.

The Imperial Navy is outraged by the arrogance of the Kingdom of Colores.  Daring to fire on an Imperial ship is an act that simply demands retaliation. The fact that the ship in question knowingly violated Colores space is irrelevant. Imperial superiority is not to be challenged.  Out here, Uppity third rate nations or colonies that have somehow managed to offend the mighty Imperium beg for lenient terms, a blood price is paid and the Sector returns to normal.  It is simply the way things are done, and the Kingdom of Colores needs a stern reminder. 

The Imperial Navy has diverted a squadron patrolling nearby to seize a mining station and hold it until reparations are paid. Luckily for the miners, the station offered no resistance.

The Royals jump in close with 5 Heavy Cruisers and two Missile Destroyers.  However, the Imperials have a large technological and quality advantage, they are unconcerned and smoothly transition to battle stations.
The KC ships get off the first volley.  The DD missiles strike home, and the Imperial Cruiser's shields are downed.  The Royal CA's guns blast through, and after a bridge hit and damage to the life support systems, the Dorn unexpectedly jumps out before even firing a shot.
The Relentless makes some speed and lashes back at her attackers.  In the ensuing fight, one DD is destroyed outright, the other leaves the fight after taking several hits. Additionally, a Cruiser takes massive damage but stays in combat.
The Relentless crew lives up to the name and continues fighting until the BB almost disintegrates.  She jumps out at the last second. The next incoming volley would have destroyed her.

There are still Imperial troops on the mining colony, and they have refused to surrender.  They have the miners and the installation as a shield, plus it is certain that the Imperium will send a relief force once higher command is aware of this disaster.

For the Kingdom of Colores this was not the near bloodless victory of the first encounter.  Losses are keenly felt by the new space force.  The only hope is to keep the forward momentum and then sue for peace on KC terms.

If only they could lay their hands on a larger ship to add to the firepower of the fleet.  Anyone know where a BB could be had?
