The Secret War, Part I: Cleaning House

In the previous episode (Link), our heroes discovered a Nazi listening post in the outer asteroid belt of the New Cypress System. The KC Frigate Helena has been dispatched on her inaugural mission to eliminate it.

The Forces
In addition to Sgt Q'Taupa's team observing the post from a nearby asteroid, Eight Ball Command has 3 teams to assault the rock.
The Nazi's have a small maintenance and command team, 4 Autom squads, and 1 heavy Autom attached to the command bunker as an Anti-Space Battery.

The Plan
The advantage the Automs bring is the ability to be deployed in place, and can be activated on command, or after the units detect the enemy.  Their drawback is that they can be shut off if the command core is accessed.
So, Eight Ball's plan is to land on the asteroid and attack the Nazi Command Cyberspace by hard-wiring into any one of the antennas. (each team has an EW specialist attached), access the command functions to shut down the Automs and steal any other data before the memory core is wiped.
The Helena's Assault Boat can only transport 2 teams at a time, so the team led by Dr. Xaden will be held in reserve.
In Summary Eight Ball will:
1. Attack Automs with fire from the Helena based on targets spotted by Sgt Q'Taupa's recon team
2. Land Teams on the installation
3. Take over an antenna, freeze the automs, and capture as much intelligence as possible before the Nazi's destroy the memory banks.

The Battle
Systems Officer Jones: ...Arrival in 3, 2, 1...
Gunnery Officer Smith: Target Data received, cycling guns, Opening Fire!
Maj Guiscard: Landing Teams Away
The Assault Boat takes fire from the Large Autom during its approach and is heavily damaged.
The Landing Teams scramble off the boat. Maj Guiscard's team lays down covering fire while Cpl Fales and his team access the Nazi Command Net.
Cpl Fales: I'm in. Attack program deployed...
A Cyberspace map is generated and Fales' Avatar appears.
He quickly locates the Command Core and moves toward it
Meanwhile in realspace, the Nazi's have recognized the threat, and Cpl Fales' team comes under fire from all directions.

Automs are closing in.
Maj Guiscard: Helena, deploy Blinding Agents on my mark, we will assault following your fire
The Nazi Specialist sends his own avatar into the net to slow the attack down
Cpl Fales: I might need some help in here
Maj Guiscard: Dr. Xaden, get you team to an access point ASAP
The clock is winding down before the local net is wiped of data
Xaden's Avatar appears and joins the fight
With the clock ticking down, Cpl Fales breaks free and captures the Core
With the shutdown of the Automs, the German Officer signals a surrender
Maj Guiscard: Secure the site, and get the wounded back to the Helena.  My compliments Admiral, in time and on target. It's a shame Fleet won't let you stay on.
Admiral King: We'll see about Fleet in due course..highest praise to you and your men.  Drinks on me when you get back from that rock.
First of all, a HUGE credit goes to Malebolgia for the Cyberspcae map.  He has a great thread on Lead Adventure Forum about incorporating cyberspace into a game here: Link. Space, ground and cyberspace all in ONE action.  What a great game!

The Secret War, Part 1

The long war between the Kingdom of Colores and the 4th Reich has paused. After the ferocious battles in the sky and on the ground of Haussen (link), the Imperial Government has deployed the fleet to impose a ceasefire. Even in the most remote backwater that is Sector Six, the Emperor’s Battleships have always been the final argument. So there is peace….
…for now

The Admiral’s conference room aboard the Imperial Battleship Relentless
The official Imperial briefing has been completed, and the Diplomats continue the discussion more informally.
Governor-General Andres: ... moving on, I must confess, I did not expect you to be supervising the local peacekeeping efforts personally.

Imperial Sub-Ambassador Sulla Tigh: I go where duty calls.  Upon deep meditation it called me to the place least likely to draw the presence of Canoness Quintilla.

Any temptation to acknowledge the humor in SA Tigh’s quip are squashed under his stone flat affect.

GovGen: Quite.

a slightly raised eyebrow is Tigh’s only response

Imperial Orderly: Sir, our long range scanners have detected ship grade weapon discharges in the system's outer asteroid belt.
SA Tigh: turning on the Gov-Gen, What is that about?!??!

GovGen: Well, as the light is just reaching us now, whatever it was, happened hours ago.

SA Tigh: Governor, that is not a denial.
GovGen: No, it’s not. The Emperor’s "peacekeeping" directives state that Colores forces may not take any hostile action against declared 4th Reich installations. I’m confident that anything those people may have "declared”, does not include a stealthed listening post in the New Cypress system. So, whatever happened out there has nothing to do with the ceasefire.

It is not clear who wins the stare down.

SA Tigh: To borrow your expression Governor, “Quite”
Orderly!   …I need another drink.

Four Hours Earlier
Outer Belt, New Cypress, onboard the Colores Frigate Helena
Systems Officer Jones: …hatches secured, ship is at battle stations, Assault Boat shows all systems green, jump navigation green, jump engine charge status green.
Captain, I mean Admiral, we are go for jump.

Admiral King: Helm, Execute

8 Ball Forward Deployed Recon Team, Undesignated Asteroid, Coordinate 357N442 +.31mi from target
Pvt. Gelejns: Sergeant? Do you think the Admiral can do it? I mean, really. Can he jump the Helena into this little pocket?
Sgt. Q’Taupa: Private, I have not been hiding out on this pebble for 3 days marking targets, living in this suit, and wondering when you are going to get us killed by letting those Nazi’s see you, just to have the Admiral crash the damn ship and my ride home.
So, yes, he can do it.
…Q’Taupa’s suit emits a small chime
As a matter of fact, he will do it in the next 10 seconds.
Get that target data ready to transmit......

Reich's Officer: Gott in Himmel!!! To the Command Post!!!

Here it comes...
The Kingdom of Colores newest starship, Frigate Series 3AA, the "Helena".

Close-ups of the Bridge...Is that Admiral King in the Captain's chair?

Passing the cruiser Ste. Marie
...and off she goes on her first war patrol...

Finished, except for some decals, but I just had to show her off. I think she matches my fleet ships rather well.

I rebuilt the bridge four times, and I'm still not completely happy with this 5th attempt.  What is so frustrating is I could execute my vision easily if I wasn't trying to achieve an interior. But without a crossover reference to 28mm figures, why build in this scale anyway?

Campaign Planning: The Secret War and the Grand Tour

We pick up the action with the Kingdom of Colores at the Governor-General’s estate just outside Travis Point on New Cypress. It is toward the end of a long multi-day strategy conference  (the signal to wrap things up is the arrival of Smithers with the 2nd replenishment of the mobile bar)
As the formal conference breaks up, a smaller group lingers...
Governor-General Andres: …and so the Imperials are definitely making good on their threat/promise to enforce the peace between us and the 4th Reich.  They are scattering their warships at nearly every possible flashpoint.
‘scuse me gentlebeings, …Smithers!  more Whiskey!

Admiral King: Spread so thin like that, it’s like they are inviting the Reich to attack.  Are the lessons of Ocrade lost so quickly?
-I’ll have another belt myself, thank-you Smithers
Gov-Gen: I agree, it is almost like they are daring anyone to open fire.
-Err…top me off there Smithers, that’s a good man!

Maj Guiscard: Some poor Imperial ship is going to end up being bait.
Adm King: AND with that homicidal looney tune, Quintilla in charge, that bait is going to be the spark that sets the whole Sector on fire. What’s our play Governor?
-Why, yes Smithers, I will take more ice this round

Maj Guiscard: Yes Governor, I have known you long enough. First you lay out all the bad news, then you reveal the “cunning plan”. So? Spill.

Gov-Gen(jerking awake)Spill? Whisky? I never spill.  What?, oh sorry, drifted off there for a minute. Plan? Oh, yes?  Quite? Hold on
..Smithers, I seem to be a bit low here…

Smithers: I left you a second tumbler, Sir.  On the side table.

Gov-GenOh, Smashing,  Darling wife? Could you explain the plan so far?
Lady Melinde: (rolling her eyes) The “plan” so far is to continue to build up our Sky and Surface forces.

Adm King: So we are going to do nothing?
-whoa Smithers, let me finish off the bottle …room seems to be tilting, don’t think I could get to the cart over there..

Lady Melinde:  Far from nothing, but currently we only have an idea to drive a plan. We must first know more about the Imperial attitude toward their “peacekeeping” mission before we can call it a plan. An Imperial ship will arrive in 2 more days to take up station here.

Maj Guiscard: I would LOVE to know how a simple society wife can blithely state the timetable for Imperial warship movements.

The room erupts in laughter. (except for the Gov-Gen, he is quietly snoring in his favorite chair while his favorite hunting dog snores along at his feet).  It is a poorly kept secret that the Governor-General’s wife has her own spy network, and frequently passes along major discoveries to the formal intelligence service (much to their continued amazement and chagrin).

Lady Melinde: The idea is to wage the “secret war” harder and better than the Reich. For cover, we are going to launch a very ambitious and splashy diplomatic initiative.

Adm. King:   A fake diplommrbrm mumble brr….
Smithers!  I..mrmbl mmmrrrbnn

Maj Guiscard: I think what the Admiral is trying to ask is: a fake diplomatic initiative?

Lady Melinde: Not fake, quite real. We are sending a very high level diplomat on a grand tour of the Sector. Trust me, every head of state will request a visit from this Ambassador. The event of the year, wherever she goes.

Maj Guiscard: She? Who, in the entirety of Sector Six, carries that level of exclusivity and affection?

Lady Melinde: Why Princess Sophie, of course…

Tabac Orbital Shipyards: Frigate Seires 3AA, Flying Bridge and Observation Deck

Construction of the Flying Bridge has begun.  Control panels and displays will be installed after atmospheric checks, so the work can continue under pressure.
